What is the typical time commitment for each lesson?

There will be other students, and the typical class lasts about 3 hours, including preparation and cleanup.

Question 4

Do I need to buy special equipment or wear specific clothing to start?

Accepted Answer

Yes, you will need to bring your own basic items to each class, such as: A sensu (fan), fukusa (silk cloth), and kaishi (paper) are the basic required materials. If you do not have these, you may purchase them at the time of registration. Wearing a kimono is preferable, or other comfortable attire, along with white socks. Jeans or short skirts are not permitted. Please remove all jewelry and watches, and abstain from wearing strong perfume. If you have long hair, please tie it up or back.

What are the costs involved in learning/participating?

There will be registration fees with Urasenke plus tuition per lesson:

Regular: $30 per class
For students: $25 per class
Oku no Okeiko: $40 per class

Is it okay if I don't know Japanese?
